Anthropic’s next round might be the biggest we’ve ever seen

I’ve been watching the AI funding circus for a while now, and every few months someone tops the last insane number. But this one from Anthropic caught me off guard.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Claude maker has received multiple pre-emptive offers at valuations between $850 billion and $900 billion. We’re talking about a potential $50 billion round here. Let that sink in for a second.

To put this in perspective, that’s roughly the GDP of a small European country. It’s more than what OpenAI reportedly raised in its last mega-round. And it’s coming from multiple parties who apparently can’t wait to throw money at Anthropic before they even formally ask for it.

The timing is interesting. Anthropic has been positioning itself as the “safe” alternative to OpenAI — the one that takes alignment seriously, that doesn’t rush products out the door. But at this valuation, they’re not just the cautious cousin anymore. They’re a heavyweight with a target on their back.

I’ve seen pre-emptive offers before in this space. They’re usually a signal that the market is frothy and investors are scared of missing out. But $900B is a different league. That’s not “frothy” — that’s “we think this company could be worth more than most publicly traded tech giants in a few years.”

What’s driving this? Claude has been quietly eating use cases that GPT-4 and Gemini have been fighting over. Enterprise contracts, coding assistants, even some government work. The model quality has improved significantly, and the brand has managed to avoid the PR disasters that have plagued some competitors.

Still, I have to wonder: what does a $900B valuation imply for future growth? At that number, you’re betting Anthropic will capture a massive chunk of the AI market and hold it for years. That’s possible, but it’s far from guaranteed. The AI landscape shifts fast — remember when everyone thought Character.AI was the next big thing?

If this round closes, it will be the largest private AI raise to date. And it will cement Anthropic as a permanent fixture in the Big Three of foundation models, alongside OpenAI and Google DeepMind. The question is whether the valuation holds up when the hype cycle inevitably cools.

For now, the money is there. And Anthropic seems happy to take it.
