X Finally Rebuilds Its Ad Platform, and Yes, It’s AI-Powered

Elon Musk’s X is making another play for advertisers, and this time it’s not just tweaking the old system. The company started rolling out a completely rebuilt ads platform on Thursday, one that leans heavily on AI for targeting and placement.

It’s no secret that X has had a rough time with ad revenue since Musk took over. The early years were brutal, forcing the company to scramble toward subscriptions and AI products just to keep the lights on. But according to eMarketer, things have been turning around: estimated ad revenue hit $2.26 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $2.46 billion in 2026. That’s still half of what Twitter pulled in during 2021, but at least the trend line is pointing up again.

Now X wants to accelerate that recovery with a fresh foundation. The company describes the new platform as having “modern retrieval and ranking systems” powered by AI. In plain English, that means better ad targeting, more relevant placements, and more control for marketers. AI handles the heavy lifting behind the scenes to optimize campaigns automatically.

Monique Pintarelli, head of global advertising at xAI, framed the rebuild as a bold move that few companies would attempt. “Very few companies would have the ambition and technical courage to completely rebuild their entire advertising platform in such a short timeframe,” she said in a statement posted on X. She promised “rapid and seamless integration of ongoing innovation” and a steady stream of new features.

I’ll believe the rapid part when I see it. Rebuilding an ad platform from scratch is a massive undertaking, and X’s track record with large-scale technical projects has been mixed. But the company does have a decent incentive to get this right: after merging with xAI last year, the ad platform became an obvious place to put that AI talent to work.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The entire tech industry is riding an AI-powered ad boom right now. Google, Meta, and others are all reporting strong ad revenue growth, largely because AI systems are automating everything from ad creation to measurement. The New York Times noted this week that these tools are also lowering the barrier for smaller businesses, giving mom-and-pop shops access to the same capabilities that used to be reserved for corporate giants.

X’s rebuild is essentially playing catch-up in that race. The question is whether the platform can deliver on its promises fast enough to convince advertisers who got burned during the chaotic early Musk years. The phased rollout suggests X is being cautious, which is probably wise. But in the ad business, trust takes years to build and seconds to lose. We’ll see how this one plays out.
