Musk v. Altman Just Had a Wild Moment Nobody Expected

I’m not a lawyer, so I probably only caught half of what went down. But even I could tell that Elon Musk’s legal team might have just stepped in it.

Jared Birchall — Musk’s finance guy and the man who gets things done — took the stand after Musk today. Most of his testimony was dry, the kind of stuff that exists mainly to get documents into the record. Boring, but normal. Then, right at the tail end, something interesting happened.

The lawyer running the direct examination seemed to be wrapping up, and then — whoops. The jury was out of the room, and the judge apparently let something slip that nobody expected. I’m not going to pretend I caught every legal nuance, but the room went quiet, and the vibe shifted fast.

This is the kind of thing that makes tech trials fun to follow, even if you’re not a courtroom junkie. Birchall is Musk’s fixer, the guy who handles the messy stuff. Seeing him on the stand under oath is already a big deal. But having a surprise pop up while the jury isn’t even there? That’s rare.

I don’t know what the judge said exactly, but the way people reacted tells me this isn’t going to be a clean win for anyone. And honestly, watching Musk’s team fumble like this is a bit satisfying, given how much they’ve been posturing.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the transcripts when they drop. Until then, this is the kind of courtroom drama that makes you glad you’re not a lawyer — but also glad you’re watching.
