Satya Nadella on the New OpenAI Deal: ‘We Fully Plan to Exploit It’

Satya Nadella doesn’t mince words when it comes to business. At a recent event, the Microsoft CEO made it clear that the company’s new deal with OpenAI is a strategic win, and he’s not shy about saying they’ll “fully plan to exploit it.”

For context, this isn’t your typical partnership. Microsoft gets to offer OpenAI’s technology to its cloud customers through Azure — and here’s the kicker: they don’t have to pay for it. That’s a sweet deal by any measure.

I’ve seen a lot of corporate partnerships come and go, but this one has teeth. Nadella’s choice of the word “exploit” is refreshingly honest. Most executives would dress this up as “maximizing synergies” or “unlocking value.” He just says what they’re going to do.

What does this mean in practice? Azure customers will get access to models like GPT-4 and beyond without Microsoft having to foot the bill for the underlying R&D or licensing. That’s a massive competitive advantage against AWS and Google Cloud, both of which have to negotiate their own deals or build from scratch.

The timing makes sense too. Microsoft has been all-in on AI since the early days of OpenAI’s partnership, and this deal locks in their position. They’re not just a customer or an investor — they’re the distribution channel. And they’re doing it without the cost drag that usually comes with reselling someone else’s tech.

Is there a downside? Sure. Microsoft becomes dependent on OpenAI’s continued innovation. If OpenAI stumbles or pivots, Microsoft’s AI strategy takes a hit. But for now, this is about as good as it gets for Nadella and company.

I’ll be watching how aggressively they roll this out. If history is any guide, Microsoft will move fast, integrate deep, and make life harder for everyone else in the cloud market. Exploitation, indeed.
